Pregnancy and Pounds: Navigating the Risks of Obesity for Mother and Baby: Obesity in pregnancy is a growing public health concern, with significant implications for both maternal and fetal health. Defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, obesity in pregnancy increases the risk of a range of complications, including gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery. These conditions not only jeopardize the well-being of the mother but also elevate the likelihood of preterm birth, fetal macrosomia, and neonatal complications such as respiratory distress syndrome. Furthermore, maternal obesity has been linked to long-term health consequences, including an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Obesity during pregnancy can also affect the course of labor and delivery, with higher rates of operative interventions like cesarean sections, which in turn raise the risk of infection and postpartum recovery challenges. Additionally, the presence of excess maternal adiposity may alter placental function, contributing to abnormal fetal growth and development. Addressing obesity in pregnancy requires a multifaceted approach, including preconception counseling, early screening, and a focus on lifestyle modifications such as healthy eating and physical activity. Health care providers should offer individualized care and support to minimize risks and optimize outcomes for both mother and child. Public health strategies aimed at preventing obesity and promoting healthier weight management could play a pivotal role in reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Update: Mental Health Disorders in the Peri-partum Period: Mental health disorders are prevalent in the peri-partum period. The lack of screening for mental health disorders during this vulnerable time in a woman’s life results in unaddressed maternal mental health issues, inadequate treatment and potentially jeopardizes the life of the woman and her offspring as well as affecting family functioning. Advanced practice providers in all specialties provide care for peri-partum women and should be involved in screening for mental health disorders with the goal of providing treatment or referring to an appropriate treating provider. The objective of this session is to review the prevalence of mental health disorders affecting women in the peripartum period, describe validated and reliable screening tools the advanced practice provider can incorporate in practice to screen for mental health disorders. One exemplar will be discussed in detail that screens for posttraumatic stress disorder related to childbirth trauma.

Breakout Session B3 - Bring Back My Estrogen: Taking the Fear out of Hormone Therapy

    Kristin Mau APRN, FNP-C, MSCP
    1.0 CE Credit

    WOMENS HEALTH TRACK - 1.0 CE/.25 PHARM

In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) hormone study ended abruptly, focusing on the harms identified within the preliminary findings of the study. Since then, healthcare providers and patients have shown hesitancy and fear in the use of hormone therapy for the management of perimenopause and menopausal symptoms. This has led to a lack of training for practitioners on the risks, benefits, and prescribing principles of hormone therapy. The refusal of treatment has left women to suffer through their symptoms during the menopausal transition and has made an impact on chronic disease. About 70-80% of menopausal women are symptomatic and women see on average 5-7 clinicians before receiving proper treatment for their symptoms. Women deserve an individualized approach to menopause care with shared clinical decision making between the patient and provider. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the safety and efficacy of hormone therapy while referencing multiple studies and trials. Topics for discussion include the physiologic changes during this midlife transition, the many benefits of treating menopausal symptoms and a brief review of pharmacologic formulations of hormone therapy. With increased training and knowledge, providers can improve quality of life and health outcomes for women.

Breakout Session D2 - Anatomy of an EKG: Introduction to EKG Interpretation

    Tranise Goodlow DNP, APRN, AGACNP-BC
    1.0 CE Credit

PRIMARY CARE TRACK - 1.0 CE

Accurate EKG interpretation is a critical skill for nurse practitioners, yet many struggle with confidence and proficiency. Research suggests that gaps in formal training contribute to a reliance on automated interpretations, increasing the risk of misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. A systematic review by Chen et al. (2022) highlights that variability in EKG competency among nurses stems from limited training and inconsistent exposure. Addressing this gap is essential for improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

Anatomy of an EKG – Intro to EKG Interpretation provides a structured, step-by-step approach to 12-lead EKG interpretation, equipping participants with the skills to identify normal and subtle abnormal findings. This session establishes a strong foundation in waveform recognition, interval measurement, and axis determination. Using a systematic nine-step method, participants will learn where to look, when to look, and what to look for in order to recognize normal EKG patterns, measure critical intervals, and detect conduction abnormalities.

Designed for nurse practitioners seeking to strengthen their EKG interpretation skills, this interactive course integrates engaging analogies, visual mnemonics, and case-based discussions to reinforce key concepts and improve retention. By applying a structured and clinically relevant approach, participants will leave with greater confidence in systematically evaluating EKGs and optimizing patient care.

The overall objective is to apply a systematic, nine-step approach to interpreting 12-lead EKGs, ensuring accuracy in waveform recognition, interval measurement, and axis determination.

THIS SESSION WILL NOT BE RECORDED OR MADE AVAILABLE ON DEMAND.

Kristen Zelek FNP-C, MSN, RN, FPA
    1.0 CE Credit

MENTAL HEALTH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS TRACK - 1.0 CE/.25 PHARM

    Abstract
Implicit bias and the lack of primary care provider competence in the management of anxiety disorders are some of the most common reasons why adolescents and adults delay seeking care. Current research has shown it is common for adults with anxiety disorders to receive treatment many years and even decades from the first time their symptoms start. The purpose of this presentation is to familiarize nurse practitioners with the recognition of early signs of anxiety disorders as well as the management of anxiety disorders to provide a favorable prognosis and quality of life. Of the 11 types of anxiety disorders listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), we will direct our focus on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), as this is the most common type of anxiety disorder seen across various clinical specialties. The presentation will consist of how to perform diagnostic workup for GAD, as well as how to incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the primary care setting. Additionally, the certification process for administering CBT will be discussed as well. A review of pharmacologic treatments for GAD will be presented to review basic pathophysiology of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), serotonin agonists and antagonists, antihistamines, beta blockers, anticonvulsants, and benzodiazepines. Lastly, case studies will be presented to include examples of treatment modalities for GAD.

UNIVERSAL CARE TRACK - 1.0 CE

The APRN Entrepreneur: Laying the Foundation for Private Practice and Beyond: Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are encouraged to practice to the full extent of their licensure. However entrepreneurship is commonly overlooked as an area of focus in the profession. The overall objective of this presentation is to provide foundational information for how to maximize APRN entrepreneurship opportunities across the span of a career. Topics presented that focus on the early career include negotiating contracts with employers and negotiating collaborative agreements. For consideration further into a career, content will be provided on starting a private practice, consultation roles, and other entrepreneurial APRN opportunities. An overview on how APRNs can protect themselves in these independent roles will also be covered.

The Power of Professional Identity in APRNs: Raising Our Collective Voice: Professional identity is more than a role—it is the foundation for APRNs to lead, advocate, and drive change. Grounded in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials (2021) and the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics (2025), this presentation highlights the urgency of raising our collective voice in policy, practice, and health equity. Nothing about us without us—if we are not at the table, we are on the menu.
We must increase our collective visibility. APRNs must articulate nursing’s unique contributions to interprofessional teams and the public, ensuring practice environments reflect nursing’s core values . Leadership with moral courage is critical to influencing decision-making, and engagement in professional organizations strengthens nursing’s voice. We must influence ethical decision-making and ensure that nurses are not passive participants but active architects of healthcare transformation. Active engagement in professional organizations strengthens this identity, creating a unified front to protect and advance the profession. This presentation provides strategies for APRNs at all career stages to leverage their professional identity, unify their voice, and lead healthcare transformation. It is no longer enough to practice within the system—APRNs must influence, advocate, and shape the future of healthcare.
