April Odom: Making History in ISAPN

Posted 10 months ago

In honor of Black History Month, a groundbreaking moment is on the horizon for ISAPN with the upcoming presidency of Dr. April J. Odom! Not only does April's election as the first president-elect and the last vice president of ISAPN mark a historic milestone, but it also serves as an example of progress and a source of inspiration. Her journey to this pivotal role is a testament to overcoming self-doubt, embracing leadership, and the power of visibility within the nursing community.

Breaking Barriers: First Black President of ISAPN

In October, April will be inducted as the first black president of ISAPN. This is not just a personal milestone but a monumental step for the (23-year-old) organization. April's journey to becoming the first black president of ISAPN is an inspiring example of breaking barriers and paving the way for others in leadership roles and shows that representation matters.

"I have embraced the fact that I must lead so those who are coming after me and especially those who look like me know that they can also."

Overcoming Doubts: The Path to Leadership

April has been a member of ISAPN since her days as a student nurse practitioner. She has been a part of multiple committees, participated in the mentorship program, has served on the Board for six years, and is the current chair of the bylaws committee. She has been recognized for her leadership with multiple awards. And yet, despite her extensive involvement, she still had doubts about running for president.

"At first, I questioned if I could be a good president of this type of organization." (With only about 10% of nurses in the United States identifying as Black or African American, we are not used to seeing ourselves in these positions) ISAPN is a place where every APRN can come for support, regardless of skin color.

"Thanks to my colleague Dr. Maria Jefferson-Walker for being an advocate of ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion are some of the core beliefs of our organization. There is room for growth for every member and an army of support and encouragement to help you along the way. My mentor, Dr. Danielle McCamey, the founder of DNPs of Color, really helped me realize everything that I'd been doing had been preparing me for this moment."

The Power of Visibility

April emphasizes the power of visibility, sharing how her active presence in ISAPN inspired other APRNs of color to join the organization.

"I joined ISAPN because I saw you there," a colleague admitted, highlighting how representation can motivate and empower others. April's story illustrates the ripple effect of visibility in leadership, encouraging underrepresented groups to see themselves in roles they may not have previously considered attainable.

"I've had nothing but positive experiences during my time as an ISAPN member. It's just that sometimes we feel we don't belong, yet we do. Our voices should be everywhere, in every organization, in places where decisions about patients, healthcare, and nursing are being made. That's where we should be. We have to really step into that and take up that space."

Championing Diversity and Inclusion

Understanding the critical need for diverse voices in healthcare decision-making, April is committed to making ISAPN more inclusive. Her approach includes personal invitations to influence diverse members to join the Board and to engage with members from different backgrounds actively. April's strategy is grounded in the belief that every voice matters and that inclusivity enriches the organization, ensuring it reflects the diverse populations it serves.

April's Vision for a More Connected and Fun ISAPN

Looking ahead, April's presidency is set to bring ISAPN a sense of connection and enjoyment. From introducing welcome calls for new members, connecting the state with more region activities, and supporting APRN business owners, her initiatives aim to foster a sense of community and meet the varied needs of its members. April's leadership is a new era for ISAPN, one where fun, support, and diversity are at the forefront, promising a brighter, more inclusive future for all its members.
