ISAPN Member Highlight: Doug McKain

It’s Nurses Week, so of course we are shouting out one of our ISAPN members! Meet Doug McKain, a retired Air Force Veteran with over 30 years of experience in healthcare. Read ahead to learn why he is a member of ISAPN.

What are your credentials? 

DNP, APRN-FPA, FNP-C

 

What is your area of practice/specialty?

Family Practice

 

If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go and why?

Ireland. I have always wanted to tour the beautiful countryside of Ireland with my heritage being Irish as well. 

 

How many years have you worked in healthcare? 

30 + years total in different fields of Healthcare and Education

 

What inspired you to become a member of ISAPN?

I wanted to be supportive of an organization that is always fighting to expand our practice rights as an APRN within the state of Illinois healthcare. Along with an organization that  fought for our independence as Full Practice Authority APRNs, along with being a mentor for future APRNs.

 

What is your favorite book?

The Success Principles by Jack Canfield

 

If you couldn't be an APRN, what other job would you try? 

I would be a Conservation Officer.

 

How has being a member of ISAPN benefited you?

Keeping me up to date on the most current legislative bills that affect our profession and keeping me connected to my fellow APRN colleagues. Being involved with the Mentor program to help fellow colleagues and now being a West Central Regional Chairman within the organization.

 

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice as a student. What would it be? 

Be a great listener,  ask a lot of questions, find yourself a good mentor, and never stop learning.
