Posted 8 days ago by Emily Mc Mahon

Each week, ISAPN recognizes one of its amazing members. This week, meet Tony Amberg, a long time member of ISAPN. Learn all about Tony and why he is a part of ISPAN.

Alan “Tony” Amberg

What are your credentials?

MS MSN APRN PMHNP-BC

How long have you been a member of ISAPN?

Pretty much as long as I've been a nurse practitioner, about ten years.

What is your area of practice/specialty?

Psychiatry

If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go and why?

I love water and nature. The desert is nice, but give me lush green and trees and a beach to walk on with the dogs.

How many years have you worked in healthcare?

Healthcare adjacent since 1998, in nursing for 13 years

What inspired you to become a member of ISAPN?

ISAPN changes our lives as clinicians -- beginning with changing the law so we could be clinicians. This is an organization that does not just put on conferences. It takes action to make our profession better and stronger.

What is your favorite book?

Hard to say. Right now, I'm loving "boy meets boy" romcom novels. But I grew up on SciFi and Fantasy.

If you couldn't be an APRN, what other job would you try?

I HAVE tried other jobs. I was a theater producer and director. I've worked in sales. I had a radio show (which I dearly miss.) I've worked in marketing. Loved them all.

How has being a member of ISAPN benefited you?

ISAPN changed the law so that we are no longer tied to physicians. Under the collaborative agreements, if we lose our doctor -- we're legally back to being nurses. My business is dependent on being a full practice authority NP. I have a successful private practice now, just past the fourth anniversary. Thank you ISAPN!

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice as a student. What would it be?

Get in the best NP program you can and one (like my program at Rush) that sets you up with a qualified preceptor. I have been on the receiving end of too many agonized emails and calls from nurses who are seeking someone, anyone to precept. The schools still charge by the credit hour for the practicum time, IT IS THEIR JOB TO PROVIDE THE TEACHER.
