ISAPN Member Highlight: Stephanie Crawford

Posted 1 day ago by Emily Mc Mahon

Welcome back to another ISAPN Member Spotlight! Every week, we recognize an amazing ISAPN member. This week, learn all about Stephanie Crawford and why she joined ISAPN.

Stephanie Crawford

What are your credentials?

BSN, MBA, MSN, DNP, ANP-BC, ACHPN, APRN-FPA

How long have you been a member of ISAPN?

13 years

What is your area of practice/specialty?

Adult Nurse Practitioner - I recently left my "safe" practice at a clinic to venture out and start my own business. I do contractual work where I travel with pipelines across the country to provide services for their workers - who also come from all over the country. I work out of a medical trailer on the construction site and provide primary care or urgent care, DOT Physicals - whatever is needed. The company provides this as a free service to the employees, so there is no charge to them. They are encouraged to come see me instead of going to local Urgent Care, where they would have to pay, even though most of them have insurance. Our clinic is well stocked with many OTC and some prescription meds, but we do not do any controlled substances - even prescription. I just spent 4 months in Colorado, and lived in my Motorhome at an RV Park with my dog in the mountains!

If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go and why?

If there wasn't political unrest, I have always wanted to go to Israel and the Holy Land - I would want to see where Jesus walked, where he preached, was judged, crucified, and was buried.

How many years have you worked in healthcare?

27 years

What inspired you to become a member of ISAPN?

My instructor, Donna P, at NIU, instilled in us the importance of membership and involvement in your state organization - because it is at the state level where your practice and licensure is truly affected - as well as patient care.

What is your favorite book?

"We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Woemn Trapped on Bataan" by Elizabeth Norman - it's about 99 Army and Navy nurses who were the first women ever to be sent into the middle of a battle. The author came to NIU when I was in my APRN program and spoke. She interviewed the survivors for her book - and it was amazing.

If you couldn't be an APRN, what other job would you try?

If being a professional traveler was a job, sign me up, because I'm getting pretty good at reviews on hotels and restaurants since starting my new business adventure!

How has being a member of ISAPN benefited you?

I've learned so much about myself, about people in general, skills, kept up on CEUs... but MORE importantly, I have gained lifelong friends and colleagues who I wouldn't hesitate to call if I had a question about ANYTHING.

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice as a student. What would it be?

It's okay not to know everything at the time you graduate. Graduation means you're ready for entry level practice. The next few years, surround yourself with great mentors that want to help you succeed and will teach you.
