Overview
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify indicators of abuse and neglect in pediatric patients, including physical, behavioral, and environmental warning signs that may require further assessment and reporting.
- Describe the legal responsibilities of nurses as mandated reporters under the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act and the threshold of reasonable suspicion for reporting suspected abuse or neglect.
- Explain the process for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, including required timelines, documentation expectations, and available reporting methods.
- Apply trauma-informed response principles when interacting with children and families in situations where abuse or neglect is suspected in order to promote safety, trust, and emotional support.
- Describe the role of Child Protective Services (CPS) and outline possible actions taken after a report is filed, including screening, investigation, and potential protective interventions.

Hannah Holmes is a seasoned provider and emerging leader who is passionate about building interdisciplinary teams and the systems around them to support under-resourced communities with the highest quality of care. A graduate of DePaul University’s MENP and FNP certification programs, Ms. Holmes started her career over 15 years ago as a CNA. She has since worked as a general surgery PCT, general medicine RN, and Primary Care Provider in a busy FQHC on Chicago’s near Southwest side. Her current role blends the leadership of Rush’s Department of Community Engagement APP team, with the provision of care in the department’s SBHCs and Adolescent Family Center. Hannah is pursuing a DNP in Practice Leadership from Case Western Reserve’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, where her doctoral project focuses on job satisfaction of APRNs working in Illinois. Ms. Holmes serves as the Membership Chair on the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses board of directors and sits on the membership committee for the American Organization of Nurse Leaders. Hannah has been a guest lecturer with the UIC “Community Health Outside the Exam Room” seminar series over the past 3 years, and was recognized as a Pinnacle Nurse Leader at the 2022 Power of Nursing Leadership event.
